Precision Coil Turning Workstation for Dry-Type Transformer Manufacturing

Overview

This project involved the custom development of a dedicated coil turning workstation for a global leader in power equipment manufacturing, specifically for a critical assembly stage in their dry-type transformer production line.

Building upon standard turning functionality, this unit integrates an articulating auxiliary table, built-in roller conveyors, and precision tooling holes to handle large transformer coils weighing up to 3 tons.

It ensures safe and efficient 90-degree rotation while optimizing workflow integration through meticulous design, making it a pivotal station that enhances overall assembly precision and operational smoothness.

Key Features1. Articulating Auxiliary Table: Lies flat for loading, stands up as a side support during rotation.
2. Integrated Rollers: Allows easy horizontal adjustment/mating of the coil.
3. Tooling Hole Pattern: φ18mm holes on both sides (200mm spacing) for custom fixtures or safety bars.
Control & ElectricIndependent control cabinet (Delixi components), adjustable speed, clean cable management
Safety DesignHydraulic safety lock, mechanical hard stops, emergency stop control

Challenge

  • Complex Process Integration: The process requires frequent coil handling, placement/removal of supports before/after turning. Fixed tables cause inefficiency and interference risks.
  • High Post-Turn Alignment Demand: The turned coil must align precisely with downstream supports or gauges; any misalignment compromises final assembly quality.
  • Space & Ergonomics Optimization: Needed to combine turning, buffering, and fine-adjustment functions within a compact footprint, simplifying steps and reducing operator strain.
  • Customization & Reliability: The equipment must fit specific coil dimensions and workshop flow perfectly, maintaining stability under frequent, heavy-duty cycles.

Workflow

  1. Preparation & Loading: The auxiliary table is in the flat position. The coil is placed on the main table’s rollers via crane and gently pushed against the alignment datum.
  2. Auxiliary Setup & Securing: The auxiliary table is raised to form a 90° side support. Custom fixtures or stops can be added via the side tooling holes if needed.
  3. Automated Turning: The machine is activated. The hydraulic system rotates the entire assembly smoothly through 90°.
  4. Unloading & Reset: After turning, the coil is removed by crane. The system reverses, returning to the horizontal position with the auxiliary table lowered for the next cycle.

Solutions

  • Dual-Innovation Design: The retractable auxiliary table solves interference and access issues. The integrated rollers enable easy fine positioning of multi-ton coils, drastically improving setup efficiency.
  • Future-Proof Tooling Interface: The precision-machined hole pattern along the table provides limitless flexibility, allowing quick installation of product-specific fixtures, guides, or guards for fast changeover.
  • Performance Meets Aesthetics: The throttle valve-equipped hydraulic system allows infinitely adjustable turning speed to match different process rhythms. All exposed hoses and cables are neatly routed and concealed, ensuring reliability and a clean appearance suitable for modern workshops.
  • Detail-Oriented Delivery: Strict adherence to all client specifications—from color standard (RAL6017) and rust-proofing to cable length and plug type—demonstrates our commitment as a true “production solution partner” beyond just an equipment vendor.
