Heavy-Duty Mobile Assembly Platform for Mining Machinery: Custom Lift & Traverse System
Overview
Xuzhou XCMG Mining Machinery Co., Ltd. is a global leader in the manufacturing of super-large mining excavators. As part of its continuous efforts to improve production efficiency and workplace safety, the company sought to upgrade the assembly process for its most critical structural components.
The fabrication and assembly of massive, multi-ton excavator boom sections present significant challenges. Conventional solutions—such as fixed scaffolding or basic lifting tables—offer limited flexibility, low efficiency, and increased safety risks for personnel required to work at height around large and complex structures.
To address these issues, XCMG identified a clear need for a customized, mobile, and intelligent elevated work platform, specifically designed to meet the rigorous demands of heavy-duty industrial assembly lines.

Challenges
- Complex Multi-Function Operation: The platform needed to integrate three core motions seamlessly: vertical lifting (≥1m travel), longitudinal traversing on rails (8m travel), and lateral telescoping of the deck (extending from 5m to 7m). All functions required independent yet interlocked control.
- Industrial-Grade Safety & Reliability: For tasks involving personnel at height, safety was paramount. The system demanded multiple redundant protections: load-limiting valves, hydraulic burst valves, emergency manual descent, door/position interlocks, and comprehensive fall protection with full perimeter guardrails.
- Precision & Flexibility in a Busy Line: The platform had to move precisely along a fixed rail, stop accurately at workstations, and provide a stable, adaptable work surface for assembling large excavator boom sections of varying lengths.
- Robustness for Demanding Use: All components—from the structural frame and hydraulic cylinders to the steel rail—had to be selected for durability, supporting a 500kg distributed load with high safety factors in an industrial environment.
Solution
We engineered an integrated “Lift, Move, and Extend” system, controlled by a centralized Siemens PLC:
- Triple-Axis Functionality: A 500kg capacity scissor lift provides vertical movement. A motor-driven traverse system with brakes allows precise travel along an 8-meter ground rail. Two motorized telescopic decks expand the platform width on demand.
- Uncompromising Safety Architecture: The design incorporates a multi-layered safety system, including hydraulic safety valves, overload protection, emergency stops, and mechanical-electrical interlocks to prevent unsafe operation.
- Ergonomic & Adaptive Design: The platform features 1.1m-high guardrails with continuous tie-off points, integrated access steps, and premium components such as Schneider Electric for reliable operation.
