Project: Custom Flipping Platform for Furnace Body Rotation and Refractory Lining Maintenance.
This project involved the design and manufacture of a bespoke heavy-duty flipping platform for a key metallurgical industry client.
The primary challenge was to safely and efficiently handle the 90-degree rotation of large furnace bodies (weighing up to 10,000 kg) for the critical maintenance task of refractory brick replacement.
The solution required not only immense strength but also precise positioning and secure locking to prevent any movement during the delicate brickwork, ensuring operator safety and procedural integrity.

Requirements

- The flipper features a fully welded steel base with a simple structure, designed for ease of maintenance and repair.
- It allows for fine adjustment of the flipping angle to less than 90 degrees, effectively preventing product tipping.
- Equipped with power-off protection, the unit includes start/stop and emergency stop controls on the operation panel.
- All rotating parts utilize reliable grease lubrication and are fitted with dedicated grease replenishment ports.
- The machine performs cyclic work, flipping products between vertical and horizontal orientations.
- It incorporates a rationally designed transmission housing and supports manual, cyclic operation.
- The device design accounts for the position of the lifting holes on the furnace body, which protrude in the radial direction of the furnace diameter.
Solution
- Guaranteed Stability: The platform features a custom-engineered holding system comprising a V-groove profile and multiple hydraulic side clamps to secure the vessel. An additional adjustable end fixture prevents any micro-movement during maintenance operations like brick replacement.
- Robust Construction: The main load-bearing structure is built from high-strength steel rectangular tubes (200*100*8mm) with a thick deck plate, ensuring rigidity under full load.
- Reliable Hydraulic System: Power is supplied by an 11kW, high-efficiency motor driving a gear pump, with force delivered through four Φ160 mm bore hydraulic cylinders.
- Multi-Layer Safety Design: The system integrates cylinder anti-burst valves, hydraulic overload protection, an emergency stop circuit, and electrical phase-loss protection to ensure fail-safe operation.
- Durable Industrial Finishing: The structure received professional surface preparation (shot blasting to Sa2½) and a high-performance coating system (115µm total thickness, heat-resistant aluminum silicone topcoat) for long-term corrosion resistance.
Workflow
- Setup & Secure
Position the furnace onto the platform. Engage the V-groove, side clamps, and adjustable end fixture to lock it in place. - Controlled Flipping
Initiate movement via remote control. The hydraulic system smoothly rotates the load to the required angle (up to 90°). The process is stable and adjustable, preventing tipping or impact. - Safety & Maintenance
Safety systems remain active throughout. Routine lubrication is performed via accessible grease ports on all rotating parts. - Reset & Repeat
After work is completed, smoothly return the vessel to its original position. The platform is then ready for the next cycle.
